Tallinn Libraries get smart return shelves

21. January 2025

Tallinn Libraries invites you to discover a new convenient self-service solution – in the service halls of the libraries, all you need to do to quickly return materials is to place them on the “smart” return shelf and press “Return”.

Return shelves based on RFID technology, which are already quite common in other parts of the world but have been introduced for the first time in Estonia, automatically record the return of materials in the library system and allow readers to select new reading material or perform other tasks more quickly.

Self-service machines have already been installed in all libraries, allowing readers to borrow and return items without the librarian’s intervention. Last year, more than 26 000 items were borrowed and more than 36 000 returned using self-service machines.

In many libraries, 24/7 loaning lockers give readers the opportunity to borrow books or magazines they have reserved even when the library is closed. In addition to the loaning lockers at the Südalinna, Liivalaia, Kännukuke, Laagna, Pelguranna, Pirita, Pääsküla and Väike-Õismäe libraries, you can now also use the loaning locker at the Nõmme library.

“We have completed most of the planned self-service solutions for Tallinn Libraries. People have already embraced the new facilities and we hope that the ‘smart’ return shelves will make it even easier for them to use the library,” said Kaie Holm, Library Director. “The upgrades are certainly not over yet and we will continue to make library services more accessible and modern this year.”
